About

I'm Jamaal—also known as Mali. I'm a computational designer + apparel/knit programmer.

In the computational design master's program at Carnegie Mellon University, I investigated computation, its history, emerging technologies, and novel methods for new material assemblies. Working alongside artists, architects, designers, and engineers fostered use of both the creative and analytical facets of the mind.

Through my involvement in the CMU Textiles Lab, the CoDe Lab, Studio for Creative Inquiry, and my master's thesis, I've explored methodologies that bridge computational analysis and design strategies to more ancient, humanistic crafts. I aim to continue to leverage computation as a means to unlock new aesthetic and performative potentials in textiles, apparel, and other designed artifacts that comprise the human ecology.

In pushing the boundaries of design through technology, I hope to contribute to a world where new, advanced technologies can better support old-world human needs and sensibilities.
